Magellan’s circumnavigation of the globe was one of the most important events in history. In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, set sail from Spain with five ships. His goal was to find a new route to the Spice Islands by sailing west. The journey was long and difficult, but Magellan and his crew were determined.

During the journey, the ships sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and then down the coast of South America. They discovered a passage, now called the Strait of Magellan, which allowed them to reach the Pacific Ocean. This was a major discovery, as no European had sailed through it before.

Magellan’s expedition faced many challenges, including storms, hunger, and sickness. Sadly, Magellan did not complete the journey. He was killed in a battle in the Philippines in 1521. However, his crew continued the journey without him, led by Juan Sebastián Elcano.

In 1522, one ship, the Victoria, returned to Spain with only 18 of the original 270 men. They became the first people to sail all the way around the world. Magellan’s voyage proved that the Earth was round and could be circumnavigated, changing how people understood the world.
